Frequently Asked Questions to Explore the Neotraditional Tattooer’s Perspective

Neotraditional Snake and Wolf Tattoo

What are your hours?

I work tattoo Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11am – 5:00 PM.

How do I book an appointment?

Go to my booking page and fill out the form. This will get you in line for a consultation. We will have an initial consultation via Zoom. After a consultation, I will send a link to choose an appointment date and leave a deposit.

Do you work in other styles?

Style is the one aspect that I believe an artist shouldn’t actively try to change. I have a particular way that I envision my work. Trying to force myself into another artist’s style leads to less certainty in my work. My brain wants to go a particular direction, and attempting to force anything else leads to a lack of direction internally. For this reason I ask my clients to be sure you are familiar with my style of tattooing. Anything I design will be similar to what you see in my portfolio. Over many years I’ve adapted my own neotraditional style that will hold up well over time.

Will you do my tattoo in black and gray?

I have lots of experience with black and gray tattooing. Most client’s tend to seek out my color work, which is why you mostly see color in my portfolio.

Where are you located?

You can find me at Portal Tattoo, in Woodstock Georgia. 2370 Towne Lake Pkwy # 110, Woodstock, GA 30189

How long have you been tattooing?

I began tattooing professionally in 2011.

How long will my tattoo take?

It will depend on the size of your tattoo and the level of detail. Having a lot of small detail or smaller subject matter tends to take longer than something on a large scale with bigger details. I like to use the analogy of a paint roller versus a small brush for trim work. The paint roller quickly covers large spaces, while handling a smaller brush with tremendous care maintains the finer details.

How much do you charge?

I prefer to give a flat rate for single session tattoos. Often I will give an estimate between two numbers, to allow some wiggle room depending on how long it takes. For large scale work like sleeves, full back pieces, I charge a flat rate for the entire day. My day rate is $1,545 for 2024.

Does my deposit count towards the cost of my tattoo?

Yes, we will apply the full amount of your deposit to the final cost of your tattoo upon its completion. You can find my deposit policy on the booking page.

Do you use numbing cream?

I do not recommend using a pre-procedure numbing cream or gel. These can provide some level of pain relief (usually for less than an hour), however these products change the texture of skin. It makes your skin very spongy, limiting the ease of needles penetrating the skin. This can easily lead to an over working of the skin during a tattoo procedure. I do use Bactine while I tattoo. Bactine, an over-the-counter wound spray, contains 4% lidocaine and can ease soreness after a procedure breaks the skin. However, it isn’t always effective and works best when used well into a tattoo session.

Will you do cover ups?

Yes, I regularly do cover ups. I consider each one on a case-by-case basis. You could say the stars need to align for cover ups: we must both agree on a subject matter that will work for the particular job. For example, a yellow flower is not going to cover a black tattoo, or really any other color. Generally, cover ups must be larger and darker than the tattoo to be covered. With this in mind, I only take cover ups that I am confident will look like a normal tattoo. The last thing I want is for a client to get a larger, darker tattoo that they still love.
